In this article, I tell you what is difference between Shorthand and Stenography.

The Process of converting long speeches into Short form is called Shorthand. The average typing speed in shorthand typing is 80 wpm.

What is the meaning of Stenographer :

A stenographer is a professional who has the ability to convert coded language into a long speech.

Today, we also discuss what is the qualification, percentage, age limit, exam stages, syllabus, work, and salary for the stenographer post.

Shorthand is a post that has vacancies in many departments.

Qualification for Stenographer Post :

The candidate who wishes to apply for the stenographer should be passed 12th in science, commerce, or art stream.

Sometimes in private companies, graduation is also required.

Percentage for Stenographer Post :

The candidate should score at least 60% in 12th.

Age Limit for Stenographer Post :

The age limit may be different for different departments, but it is generally between 18 to 30 years.

For the Grade C Exam, the age limit is between 18 to 30 years. For the Grade D Exam, the age limit is between 18 to 27 years.

There is also age relaxation for different reserved categories.

Age Relaxation for Stenographer :

SC/ST - 5 Years

OBC - 3 Years

PWD(Unreserved) - 10 Years

PWD(OBC) - 13 Years

PWD(SC/ST) - 15 Years

Ex-serviceman - 3 year after deduction of the military service rendered from the actual age as on closing date of receipt of online application

Defence Personnel disabled in operation during hostilities in any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as consequences thereof - 3 Years

Defence Personnel disabled in operation during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof(SC/ST) - 8 Years

Central Government Civilian Employees: who have rendered not less than 3 years regular and continuous service as on closing date for receipt of online applications - 40 Years

Central Government Civilian Employees: who have rendered not less than 3 years regular and continuous service as on closing date for receipt of online applications(SC/ST) - 45 Years

Widow/Divorced Women/Women judicially separated and who are not remarried - 35 Years

Widows/Divorced Women/Women Judicially separated and who are not remarried(SC/ST) - 40 Years

Stenographer Jobs :

Different departments such as Railway, SSC, High Court, DRDO, Defence, CRPF, CISF, and private companies are usually recruiting stenographers. There are steno jobs in private sectors are also available. Candidates can check vacancies for different department's official websites for vacancies.

Fee for Stenographer Post :

The form fee for the General and OBC category is 100 Rs. There is no fee for women and SC/ST/PWD and Ex-serviceman Category.

Exam Stages for Stenographer Post :

There is a written test and a shorthand skill test is carried out for stenographer posts.

200 questions for 200 marks are asked in the stenographer's written test. The total time for the written test is 2 hours.

Online Paper :

General Intelligence and Reasoning - 50 Questions - 50 Marks

General Awareness - 50 Questions - 50 Marks

English Language - 100 Questions - 100 Marks

Total Marks - 200

Total Time Duration - 2 Hours

The candidate who qualifies written test is eligible for a skill test. This exam is conducted online. There is a negative marking of 1/4th for each wrong answer.

In the skill test, first document verification is carried out where they verify your 12th mark sheet and category certificate if applicable.

Shorthand Test for Stenographer :

In the shorthand test, 10 minutes audible dictation test is carried out. There is also a trial 2 to 3 times.

In English Stenographer for Group D post candidates need to write 800 words in shorthand and speed should be 80 words/minutes.

For the Group C post, candidates need to write 1000 words in 10 minutes.

After that candidates need to do computer typing. 

In English computer typing, For Group D post there are 50 minutes for computer typing. For the Group C post, there are 45 minutes for computer typing.

In Hindi computer typing, For Group D post there are 55 minutes for computer typing. For the Group C post, there are 45 minutes for computer typing.

After successful completion of computer typing, your typed matter would be printed on paper and they take the signature of the candidate on that paper.

Errors, Spelling Mistakes, etc... are considered in results.

Duties of Stenographer :

The work of a stenographer is different in different departments. The most common work is to convert long speeches into short-coded form.

Skill Test for Stenographer Post :

The skill test is also conducted by every department to check the skill of candidates. There is negative marking in the shorthand skill test for every mistake.

Stenographer Salary in India Per Month :

The Salary of a stenographer is between 40,000 to 50,000 Rs.

The stenographer gets a pay scale between 9300-34800 Rs for Grade C and 5200-20200 Rs for Grade D.

They also get House Rent Allowances, Dearness Allowances and Transport Allowances in their salary.

Syllabus for Stenographer Post :

The syllabus contains General Awareness, General Intelligence and Reasoning, English and Comprehension.

General Awareness - Sports, Economy, Current Affairs, Award and Honours.

General Intelligence and Reasoning - Arithmetic Computation, Number series, Visual Memory and Blood Relation

English Language and Comprehension - Grammer, Vocabulary, Synonyms-Antonyms, Sentence Structure

SSC Stenographer Exam :

The Stenographer Group C and Group D Exam are conducted by Staff Selection Commission. Selected candidates are placed in various ministries, departments, and organizations in the government of india.

Cutoff for Stenographer Exam :

To qualify for a stenographer exam, the candidates need to qualify for an online examination and cutoff set by the staff selection commission.

The selection depends on the merit of the online examination. The skill test is only qualifying and the candidate needs to only qualify for the shorthand skill test.

High Court Stenographer :

The High court will release the vacancies from time to time as per their requirements. You just need to check jobs notification websites regularly.

High Court Qualifications for Stenographer :

Candidates should pass 12th from a recognized university or board in any stream such as art, commerce or science.

Candidates should have written knowledge of different Devanagari scripts.

High Court Stenographer Age Limit :

The age limit of the candidate for High court stenographer is between 18 to 40 years.

English shorthand Test :

1. Dictation of Passage -

Duration - 6 Minutes

Speed - 80 words per minute

2.Transcription and typing of Dictated passage in English on Computer - 

Duration - 50 Minutes

Total Marks for Both Dictation, Transcription and Typing - 100 Marks

Hindi Shorthand Test :

1. Dictation of Passage -

Duration - 6 Minutes

Speed - 70 words per minute

2.Transcription and typing of Dictated passage in Hindi on Computer - 

Duration - 50 Minutes

Total Marks for Both Dictation, Transcription and Typing - 100 Marks

Computer Test :
