In this article, we discuss Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928 and its background and activities.
Bardoli is a part of the Surat district which is presently in Gujarat. In British India, it used to be part of the Bombay Presidency.
The British government used to get the assessment of the land done after every 30 years. With this, it was used to determine how much the land revenue of any place should increase.
The last land assessment was done in 1896 and just 30 years later in 1928, the next land assessment was to be done.
The responsibility of this was given to M S Jaikar who was the Deputy Collector of Surat at that time.
Jacker did not have any experience in this work, instead of talking with the people of Bardoli taluka and without conducting any survey, he prepared its report on the basis of the information written in the British document.
M S Jaikar gave the recommendation to hike 30% of the land revenue. On this, the people of Bardoli started protesting but the British government was not listening to them.

Congress formed the Bardoli Inquiry Committee to find out whether the land revenue should really be increased by 30%.
This committee went from village to village and conducted a survey and it was found that it is not right to increase the land revenue by 30%.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Arrived at Vardoli on the demand of the people. They knew that the one who knows the common people stays together in the beginning but runs away when the police are there.
For this, Sardar Patel found a way and called religious members and made the people swear that they will not under any circumstances till the movement is over till then they will not fill the land revenue.
Satyagraha started and satyagrahi demanded that the government should form a tribunal whether the land revenue should be increased or not.
During this movement, Vallabhbhai Patel planted 13 chavani's in the entire Bardoli, also started Bardoli Satyagraha Patrika.
So that the people of Bardoli and its surroundings are also aware of the issues of Bardoli. Sardar Patel had also formed the Intelligence Wing and his job was to keep an eye on the villagers so that, it can be found out that he is not breaking his oath.
Sardar Patel had direct instructions that if you break your oath, you will be boycotted socially. To suppress this movement, the government started beating people.

All these things caused a lot of problem to the people of Bardoli but people started Satyagraha.
Gandhiji also came in August 1928 to join the Satyagraha. In the end, the government had to obey the people and by surveying the government, the land revenue increased by only 6%.
