Chauri Chaura Incident happened in the United Provinces of British India. This area was of today's Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand.

Chauri Chaura was a small town near Gorakhpur. In August 1920, Gandhiji started the Non-Cooperation Movement. 

Meanwhile in Chauri Chaura, a retired army officer on 2 February 1922 together with some of his friends, started a protest about the increased price of some things in the market.

These leaders were beaten up and later arrested and put in the police lockup of Chauri Chaura.

When this matter was reached till the people, then the people were angry as to why the lathi-charge was done even after the peaceful dharna was held.

After 2 days, people did a protest against the police. The police did not pay much attention to those people because they were very few people.

The next day a lot of people started going towards the market and forcibly closed the wrong shops. On this matter the police came again, lathi-charged and then the police put the leader in jail.

The public surrounded the police station and started raising slogans against the government and the police. The public was saying that our leaders should be released from jail.

The police tried to control the situation but people did not agree and started pelting stones at the police.

The British Government imposed Martial Law to control the situation. Gandhiji was very angry with this incident and with this, he also closed the non-cooperation movement on 12th 1922.
