Indian Provincial Elections 1945 - 1946

In this article, we discuss Indian provincial elections 1946 for various competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, etc...

Wavell Plan failed in June 1945. Soon after, the government was changed in Britain and the government of the Labor Party was formed. The new Prime Minister of Britain was Clement Atlee.

World War II also ended on 2 September 1945. The British government was very busy in the war, but by the end of the war, the British government could focus on India.

Therefore, on 19 September 1945, Lord Wavell announced that elections would be held in the center and province between December 1945 to January 1946.

A constitutional body will be formed on the basis of these elections and an executive council will also be formed.

All political parties started their election campaign. The Congress described itself as the representative of the entire population of India, while the Muslim League described itself as the sole representative of all Muslims.

Muslim League was saying that if you want Pakistan then vote for Muslim League. Congress was saying that if United India has to be saved from Partition, then vote for Congress.

The Congress was able to perform very well in these elections and the Muslim League had won all the reserved seats.

The Muslim League could not win a single non-Muslim seat.

These elections were held for both the center and province levels. The total was 102 seats in the center, out of which Congress won 59 seats. Muslim League won 30 seats.

The Congress was the majority party in Assam, Bihar, Central Provinces, Bombay, Madras, NWFP, and United Provinces. Muslime league was the majority party in Bengal, Punjab, and Sindh.

In these elections, a total of 492 seats was reserved for Muslims, and out of these 429 seats were won by Muslim League. That means 87% of the Muslim seats were occupied by the Muslim League.

In these elections, it was proved that the Muslim League is the sole representative of the Muslims.
