Third Carnatic War

In this article, we discuss the third Carnatic war and discuss its reasons, and ended with which treaty.

In October 1754, the French East India Company removed the dupleix and made Godeheu the governor of the French East India Company.

Godehue came for only 4 months and then went back to France from India. Only one important thing happened during his tenure and that was the Peace Treaty of Pondicherry.

In 1755, Leyrit was made governor of the French East India Company. But Leyrit was not a fit person for the post of governor.

Seven Years War started in Europe in 1756. In this war, Britain and France were fighting against each other. The effect of this war was also seen on India.

The British East India Company attacked the Chandernagar factory of the French East India Company. Chandernagar was a part of Bengal at that time.

In 1688, the first director of the French East India Company bought this place from the Mughal Subedar by paying 40,000 coins.

A lot of work was done on this factory at the time of Dupleix. Chandernagar became the main commercial center of the French East India Company in Bengal.

In Europe, the French governor understood that the war was not going to be handled with Leyrit. Therefore, the French government removed Leyrit and made Lally the new governor in 1758.

Lalli was a capable and daring commander. As soon as it came to India, he attacked on Fort St. David of the British East India Company in Cuddalore.

Lalli was successful in this and thus Fort St. David was captured by the French East India Company. Lalli's next target was Fort St. William, Madras.

The financial condition of the French East India Company was poor. But still, in December 1758, Lalli besieged Fort St. George.

The British East India Company sent several troops from Fort St. Williams in Bengal for help. Lalli was not at all ready for this and therefore he had to withdraw the siege of Madras in 1759.

On 22 January 1760, a battle took place between the French East India Company and the British East India Company in wandiwash, which is also called the Battle of Wandiwash.

Wandivash is a place in the Carnatic region that is 110 km from Madras. In this battle, Sir Eyre Coote was leading the British East India Company and Lally was leading the French East India Company.

In the Battle of Wandivash, the French East India Company was defeated very badly. After this, the British East India Company also captured Pondicherry in March 1761.

The British East India Company occupied all Indian positions of the French East India Company. The British East India Company also took Lalli captive.

On the other hand, the 7 Year War ended in Europe in 1763. Between the two European countries, in 1763, a Peace Treaty was made, which is also called the Treaty of Paris 1763.

It was said in this treaty that whoever took possession of another's territory in these 7 years would return it.

According to this treaty, Chandernagar, Pondicherry, Mahi, and Karaikal were given back to the French East India Company.

The French East India Company was also told that from now they would not siege Fort in any way and he can't keep his troops.

The British East India Company only allowed the French East India Company to trade peacefully.
