Fourth Anglo Mysore War

In this article, we discuss the Fourth Anglo Mysore war and its reasons and causes for various competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, etc...

The Fourth Anglo Mysore War started in 1799 and ended in just 17 days.

In the Third Anglo-Mysore War, more than half of the territory of Mysore was negotiated between the British East India Company, the Nizam of Hyderabad, and the Maratha's.

Apart from this, Tipu Sultan had to be given 3 crores rupees in the form of war damage. Tipu accepted all the conditions of the Treaty of Seringapatam.

Tipu Sultan recovered his losses between 1792 and 1799. Tipu joined hands with the French East India Company of India.

Tipu also started the Jacobin Club in Mysore. The Jacobin Club was a French revolutionary organization whose aim was to replace Monarchy in France and make France a republic.

Jacobin Club in Egypt was established in 1794. Tipu helped the French Republican officers a lot in this.

Tipu Sultan also took the membership of Jacobin Club. Tipu Sultan got himself treated as a citizen. Tipu Sultan also planted the Liberty Tree in his capital Seringapatam.

Napoleon was also a member of the Jacobian Club. Between 1792 and 1799, the Austrian Dominions were over the German states and the Italian states.

In March 1796, Napoleon attacked Austria, and Austria was defeated in it. After this, in October 1997, the Treaty of Campo Formio was signed between Austria and Napoleon.

After this Napoleon started his Egyptian campaign with his army of 38000. His plan was to attack the British East India Company of India by making Egypt his base.

Tipu Sultan asked Napoleon to fight together against the British East India Company and Napoleon agreed.

After that tipu sultan sent emissaries to Arabia, Afganisthan, Kabul, Zaman Shah, and Mauritius.

The British East India Company had come to know about this and the new Governor-General, Lord Wellesley had arrived in India.

Lord Wellesley asked to sign a subsidiary alliance as soon as he came to India, but Tipu refused to sign it.

So Lord Wellesley took the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad with him to attack Mysore.

All three laid siege to Seringapatam, the capital of Mysore in April 1799, and Tipu Sultan was killed in this war.

In this way, the 4th Anglo Mysore War ended on 4 May 1799. British East India Company took possessions of kanara, wayanad, coimbatore, dwaraporam and seringampatam of mysore.

Maratha's took possessions of Soonda and Harponelly. Maratha's refused to take these districts because the British East India Company had promised that he would be given half of Mysore.

The Nizam of Hyderabad was given the territories of Gooty and Gurramkonda. Mysore was very small now.

The new Mysore was handed over to the Wodeyars Dynasty. He was made king upon a minor child of the Wodeyar Dynasty. The name of this child was Krishna Raja III.

Lord Wellesley made this little child the king and got him to sign a subsidiary alliance.
