Treaty of Tilsit is signed between Napoleon of France and Alexander I of Russia in 1807.

It was done in this treaty that both of them would invade India through land route.

The news of the Treaty of Tilsit had reached the East India Company in India.

As soon as the British East India Company came to know about this, they activated the Ring Fence Policy and thought of making Punjab a buffer state.

At that time the Maharaja of Punjab was Ranjit Singh.
Lord Minto sent a delegation to Maharaja Ranjit Singh under Sir Charakas Metcalfe.

Later on, Charles Matcalfe became the Governor General of India. Negotiations started in 1807 between the Maharaja of Punjab and Charles Matcalfe.

The British East India Company wanted to sign an Offensive Defensive Treaty with Punjab.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh raked this condition here that if there was a war between the Punjab and the Afghans, British East India Company would not interfere.

The second condition was that the emperor of the Malwa region should be Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

But the East India Company was not ready for this and the negotiations between the two ended.

In 1808 Majraja Ranjit Singh tried to annex the Malwa region.

In 1809 Majraja Ranjit Singh was attacked by the British East India Company and he became successful.

After that Treaty of Amritsar was signed between Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British East India Company.

After this treaty, Maharaja Ranjit Singh had to accept the Sutlej river as his southern boundary.

After  this Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured Multan in 1818, captured Kashmir in 1819, and captured Peshawar in 1834.
