In this article, we discussed second anglo sikh war in detail.
In the
earlier article we saw that in 1809, the Treaty of Amritsar was signed between
Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British East India Company, according to which
the Sutlej River was considered as the border between the British East India
Company and the Kingdom of Lahore, that is, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh could no
longer extend his kingdom to the south of the Sutlej river.
In such a
situation, Maharaja Ranjit Singh started expanding his kingdom in other
directions, he captured Multan in 1818, Kashmir in 1819 and Peshawar in 1834.
In these areas he had pointed out his governors.
Now you know
that Maharaja Ranjit Singh died in June 1839 and after that the king kept on
changing. Now in 1845, Dalip Singh was the king.
In 1845,
Raja Dilip Singh was accused by the British East India Company of having
breached the Treaty of Amritsar (1809) by sending his troops south of the
Sutlej River. With this justification, the British East India Company attacked
the Lahore kingdom and in 1845 first Anglo-Sikh war started and this war ended
with the treaty of Lahore in 1846.
The
situation was not completely peaceful even by this treaty, so in December 1846
another treaty was done and that treaty was the treaty of bhairowal. With this
treaty, all the powers of the lahore kingdom had come to the British residence
Henry Lawrence.
Dalip Singh
was a Maharaj in name only. Both these treaty were quite humiliating and the
people of Punjab found it difficult to tolerate them. Dewan Mulraj was the
governor of Multan in 1848. The British Residence Henry Lawrence demanded
increased revenue to them.
dewan Mulraj
refused to give them both. The British government thought of making a new
governor and sent a new British governor and two British officers with him.
There was a lot of anger among the people and people killed these two British
officers. And thus the second anglo sikh war started in 1848. This war ended in
1849 and the Sikh Army had to surrender in this war.
